Leniently Sentence Me

You usually wasn’t down,
You used to wear a frown
Often and for a long while
As I acted like a fun Clown
With a big, grinning smile.
Are you now in sad denial,
I am in the dock on trial
And innocently I duly plea –

I am honestly guilty
Of loving sweet thee,
Be lenient with me
In your summing up.
A lustrum I’ve waited,
A sentence I’ve hated.
